February Message from Michael Tilt, CEO

We started the year with the major city housing markets still on the up-and-up, and many in the media asking if the bubble is about to burst. Not quite, if the recent sale at One Sydney Park in Alexandria is anything to go by.  In the past couple of weeks, a three-bedroom apartment sold off the plan for more than $3 million, setting a price record for the suburb.  MacroPlan conducted the residential market study for this $700 million master-planned community which is fringed on three sides by Sydney Park, one of the largest inner city parks.

Providing a broad national perspective on the economy and property markets over the coming year, our Chairman, Brian Haratsis, is presenting at the Urban Developer’s Annual 2018 Market Outlook.  He’s joined by REA Group Chief Economist, Nerida Conisbee, who’s looking at the key factors driving buyer demand, as well as opportunities and risks in the residential sector.

Sydney’s presentation took place yesterday (February 27), and Melbourne is on tomorrow (March 1).  But those of you in Brisbane still have time to register for this event which will take place at the Hilton on the evening of Tuesday March 27.

Brian will also be speaking in Wollongong this Friday (March 2) on the economic and social issues impacting the year ahead for the property sector.  This talk, part of the Property Council’s Outlook Series ’18, will bring Brian together with local and federal politicians for a panel discussion focusing specifically on the Illawarra region.

Given our enthusiasm for automated vehicles, MacroPlan is delighted by the announcement this month that Infrastructure Victoria is calling for submissions on how the state can best prepare for vehicles of the future.  Its list of focus areas cover technological development to digital infrastructure and land use patterns.

The Victorian government appreciates that automated and connected vehicles can bring benefits of safety, mobility and efficiency, and that zero emission vehicles can reduce carbon emissions and deliver other environmental and health benefits.

As a company that works across the nation, we hope that issues and stories involving each state are of interest to our clients across the board.  But we also know that sometimes it can feel that you’d like just a little more attention to what’s going on where you are.  As a response to this, MacroPlan is now distributing a regular WA focused newsletter, due out this month.  If you are interested in receiving that, please contact us now.

And in a further effort to make sure we are keeping in touch with all of you around this broad country, I’ll personally be travelling regularly throughout the month to visit with all our state offices and our clients. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange a meeting.

Finally, as the PyeongChang Winter Olympics wound up this past weekend, I’d like to congratulate the Aussie team and our two silver and one bronze medalists.  Sports enthusiasts will hardly have time to pause as the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are already gearing up for an April 4 start when we’re all invited to ‘share the dream’.
