Urban Planning and Land Use for Connected and Automated Vehicles

Thursday 26 July 2018 at 3:00 PM AEST

The key objective of city planning should be diverse mobility to create competitive, productive and equitable cities. Diverse mobility is defined as access to mobility options that maximise effectiveness in terms of cost, time, network impacts, social (health) outcomes and environmental outcomes. Automated vehicles will emerge on Australian roads by 2020 and will stimulate new travel patterns and new city geography.

How will urban planning and design need to change and adapt to support this future? When you imagine this future, what are the new planning and urban design opportunities?

The Australia and New Zealand Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI) Policy and Risk Group has prepared the document attached to raise public awareness and engage thought leaders to identify pathways forward, potential barriers/risks, and to encourage discussion on new policy mixes to reshape cities.

This second episode of ADVI's Hypothetical Webinar Series will be set in the near future with a range of leading experts and will focus on the impact of AVs on planning and land use.

Featured panellists include Rita Excell - ADVI Executive Director & IPWEA Vice President, Brian Haratsis - MacroPlan Dimasi, Dorte Ekelund - Principal Advisor, Smart Cities SMEC and Gary White - Chief Planner, NSW Department of Planning & Environment.
