Sydney’s New Plan: A Plan for Growing Sydney

The new ‘Metropolitan Strategy – A Plan for Growing Sydney’ was released last week, providing a platform that will see our city grow to almost 6 million people by 2036. Key elements of the Plan include:

  • A Greater Sydney Commission to facilitate growth and to work with local councils to achieve it.
  • The re-listing of Macarthur South as an ‘investigation area’.
  • The promotion of western Sydney in general and Parramatta in particular as Sydney’s second CBD. A new growth corridor from Parramatta to Sydney Olympic Park is proposed.
  • New transport initiatives including the outer Sydney orbital and a western harbour tunnel.
  • A strengthening and recognition of Port Botany, Badgery’s Creek and Sydney and Bankstown Airports as city gateways.
  • New urban renewal corridors, including Sutherland to Kogarah, East Hills to Sydenham, Hornsby to Strathfield via Epping, Hornsby to North Sydney via Gordon and Kings Cross to Bondi Junction.
  • A new Green Grid to connect environmental corridors across the city.
  • A new planning hierarchy that includes sub-regional, local and new community plans.

The Strategy covers a lot of ground and we look forward to working with our clients and colleagues in drawing out the land use implications and opportunities that the Plan presents. Should you have any specific enquiries regarding the Plan please do not hesitate to contact our Sydney office.
