About

Nigel is an experienced economist with extensive recognised expertise in urban economics, macroeconomics and economic forecasting.

Dr Stapledon has close to 50 years experience as a professional economist, including 20 years in research, teaching and advisory work in urban economics. He has held senior positions in the Australian Treasury in Canberra, with Westpac Bank where he was Chief Economist, and at the UNSW School of Economics. Nigel joined Macroplan 7 years ago whilst retaining a research and teaching position at the UNSW Centre for Applied Economic Research.

Nigel is recognised for his research into the long-term history of housing in Australia and with industry support he established a teaching program in urban economics at UNSW. Nigel’s depth of understanding on how housing, commercial/retail and industrial markets and cities work and how government policies impact on those markets, gives him a unique capacity to advise both the public and private sector. 

Key Projects
  • Providing advice and major inputs to the Federal Government agency (NHFIC) for its annual State of the Nation housing reports over 2021-23.
  • A number of major reports on proposals for residential, commercial, retail and industrial development of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, the new international airport, the new Bradfield city, and the new strategic centre at (future) Luddenham metro station. Included a bespoke report on the night-time economy.
  • Major reports on residential/commercial development for private developers at various sites including (recently) Leppington and Oran Park in Outer Western Sydney. These studies included highest and best use, financial feasibility, and market assessment.
  • Advice to NSW Government on major redevelopment sites at Broadmeadow and Glendale, including highest and best use, market assessment, and assistance in financial modelling.
  • Has provided advice and major reports to the Onkaparinga Council (in outer south of Adelaide) on long-term demand for residential, commercial and industrial land, including detailed assessment of the supply of vacant employment land and the future role of the vacant Port Stanvac site.
  • Report on the demand for FIFO worker accommodation in Port Hedland (WA), involving assessing iron ore outlook and future investment in renewable energy hub and downstream energy-intensive export industries, and the relative demand for FIFO vs traditional housing.
